Nour WahyananAge: 14nStabbed to death: April 20, 2026nLocation: Blerick (Venlo), southern NetherlandsnBackground: Moroccan rootsnChildren: -nPerpetrator: MothernnIn Blerick, a district of Venlo in the south of the Netherlands, 14-year-old Nour Wahyana died on Monday morning, April 20, 2026, from stab wounds inflicted at her family home. Emergency services, alerted at around 6:30 a.m., were unable to save the girl; she died at the scene.nnThe family had been known to support services for some time. Authorities confirm that two reports had been made in the past: one several years ago and another two years ago. Assistance was provided on both occasions. At the time of the incident, there was no active case open.nnChat messages Nour sent to friends on the evening before her death paint a troubling picture of ongoing tensions at home. She described a heated argument between her parents—according to her not an isolated incident—and referred to previous violence by her father against her mother. Neighbors confirmed that another argument took place in the home that Sunday evening. According to local residents, the family had been experiencing conflicts for quite some time; the father had reportedly been staying in a shed behind the house in recent periods.nnImmediately after the incident, both parents were arrested. On Thursday, April 23, the examining magistrate decided that the mother would remain in custody for at least another fourteen days. The Public Prosecution Service assumes that she inflicted the fatal injuries and suspects her of murder or manslaughter. The suspicion against the father was deemed insufficient to keep him in custody; he was released but remains a suspect. His role is still under investigation.nnIn addition to Nour, the family has two other children. Through the authorities, the family has requested peace and privacy and urges people not to share or distribute photos or videos of Nour on social media or at memorial sites. Nour’s death has had a significant impact on the neighborhood, her school, and beyond. Friends, classmates, and local residents left flowers, stuffed animals, and drawings. Nour was described as a caring, cheerful, and kind girl.nnThe investigation is still ongoing in full. The Public Prosecution Service warns against speculation and rumors and emphasizes that new information will only be communicated through official channels.nnIf the investigation shows that there is no indication of an honor-related motive, the case will be removed from the archive.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
