Samra Bibi and her husband Afzaal Ahmad were stabbed to death on 27 July 2026 after being lured to a graveyard under the pretext of family reconciliation. Samra was eight months pregnant at the time of the attack.
The couple had contracted a love marriage approximately one year earlier against the strong opposition of Samra’s family. Following the marriage, her relatives registered a kidnapping case (Section 365 PPC) against Afzaal. That case was later dismissed after Samra stated in court that she had married of her own free will.
On the day of the murders, Samra’s brother Shahid Abbas telephoned the couple and invited them to meet at Chani Wazeerah graveyard, claiming the family wanted to settle the dispute peacefully. Afzaal informed his father, Saif Ullah, who followed the couple with other relatives on a second motorcycle.
Upon arrival, Shahid Abbas and Yousaf (both armed with knives), together with two unidentified men, were already waiting. Yousaf held Afzaal while Shahid repeatedly stabbed him in the neck, face and body. Afzaal died at the scene. Samra fled into nearby fields but was chased, caught and fatally stabbed in the same manner. The attackers then threatened the witnessing relatives and fled.
According to Afzaal’s family, Shahid Abbas had maintained contact for several months, creating the impression that reconciliation was possible. He had even borrowed money from Afzaal under the pretext of plans to work abroad. In a video recorded after his arrest, Shahid Abbas confessed that he killed his sister and her husband because she had “run off and married a boy” from another caste (Maachi).
Police registered an FIR under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at Vanike Tarar Police Station. The two nominated suspects were arrested. At the time of reporting, the case had not yet been officially classified by police as an honour-based killing, although the circumstances – a love marriage against family wishes followed by a carefully planned ambush – clearly indicate an honour motive.

What is an honour killing? |
|
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
