Honour killing in Agoki, Pakistan: Rasool Fatima (24) shot dead during family meeting

The 24-year-old Rasool Fatima from Muzaffarpur in Sialkot District, Punjab, Pakistan, was married to Mushahid Abbas. According to the preliminary police investigation, she left her marital home approximately two and a half months before her death and began living with a man named Shiraz.

Her brother, Syed Zaki Abbas, had a dispute with Shiraz. On 2 August 2026, he shot and wounded Shiraz. Zaki was later released on bail by a court.

Elders from both families subsequently gathered in Agoki to settle the dispute. Rasool Fatima was present at the meeting. During the gathering, her brother shot her. She died before she could be taken to hospital.

Agoki police filed a murder complaint against Zaki, his mother Syeda Farida Wasi and three others, Iqbal Shah, Hassan Shah and Abbas Tufail. The Sialkot district police chief treated the case as a possible honour-related murder and ordered their arrest. Zaki was arrested during a police raid. The investigation is still ongoing.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.
wants to end the relationship.
was the victim of rape or sexual assault.
was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
