Saba Bibi, a 21-year-old divorced woman, was allegedly stabbed to death on 9 October 2026 in Chak, in Vehari District in Pakistan’s Punjab province. According to police, her family suspected that she was in a relationship. The case is being investigated as a suspected ‘honour’ killing.

Saba had divorced about a year earlier and was living with her family. Inspector Muhammad Anwar of the Gaggo police station told Pakistani news website Voicepk that her father, Zulfiqar Ali, called her to the cattle shed behind the family home. Other family members were reportedly already waiting for her there. According to Anwar, Tayyab, whom he described as Saba’s brother-in-law, was carrying a knife and stabbed her several times.

The police complaint was filed by Saba’s maternal uncle, Bashir Ahmad. It states that he and others present heard Saba screaming. When they went to the cattle shed, they reportedly saw Tayyab holding a knife, with the other suspects gathered around Saba. The complaint also attributes statements referring to family honour to those present.

According to the complaint, Saba was first taken to the Rural Health Centre in Gaggo and then referred to hospitals in Burewala and Sahiwal. The complaint states that she died of her injuries that evening while receiving treatment.

The complaint names five men: Saba’s father, Zulfiqar Ali; her paternal uncles, Sarfraz Ali and Nawaz; her maternal cousin, Muhammad Naeem; and her brother-in-law, Tayyab. Two unidentified people are also named.

According to police, Saba’s immediate family members initially did not want a case to be registered. Her uncle Bashir Ahmad therefore filed the complaint.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
