Honour killing story

Ghassan Al-D.
Born: 1990
Attempted murder: 10/11 November 2010
Residence: Berlin-Reinickendorf
Origin: Palestinian / Lebanon
Children: none
Perpetrators: brothers Abdullah and Mohamad M. (at the time of the crime 18 and 23 years old, born in Germany)
One of the rare honor killings of a man, respectively, it remains an assassination attempt.

Brothers Abdullah and Mohamad beat up their 16-year-old sister Sara because they do not accept her relationship with a man four years older. In court, they will later say that they considered the relationship a violation of family honor.

Sara started and stopped training as a dental assistant. In total she has 4 older brothers and 1 younger sister. They were all born in Berlin after their parents came to Berlin from Lebanon in 1978. Because the father is seriously ill, the oldest son Mohamad considers himself the head of the family.

On the evening of November 11, 2010, the brothers force Sara under death threats to call her boyfriend and lure him to a shopping mall. There, the brothers, along with an accomplice Ayad A. (24 years old), attacked Ghassan with a knife: "You will die today, you deserve it, this is honor, no fun," one of the attackers shouted, it was later said in court.

Another man breaks up the fighters. It is possible that this "family friend" Jamal (40 years old) was sent by the father of the two brothers. Meanwhile, their mother and grandmother had gone to the crime scene with Sara and forced her to witness the crime from the car. Later, they take away the murder weapon. A passerby calls the police, who arrest Mohamad. The brother Abdullah surrenders to the police the next day. Sara is then temporarily placed in a shelter for women.

In June 2011, the attempted murder trial begins before the juvenile division of the Berlin-Moabit District Court. The brothers and also the victim remain silent. Sara's mother allegedly said that her daughter was a slut and guilty for her brothers' misfortune. In December, Ghassan withdrew his complaint. Apparently, there is an out-of-court settlement. Ghassan and Sara marry according to Islamic law.

In July 2011, Mohamad is sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison for inflicting grievous bodily harm, Abdullah and his accomplice Ayad to 2 years and 6 months. In the justification of the sentence, the intention to kill and an honor motive are explicitly mentioned.

Questions about honour killings

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
