Honour killing story
Born: 1992
Attempted murder: July 10, 2008
Residence: Bonn
Origin: Victim: Germany; Perpetrator: Lebanon
Children: none
Perpetrators: Alan M., Mohammad H. (at the time of the crime 17 years and 18 years old)
Under the pretext that he has a surprise for her, Alan lures his ex-girlfriend Vanessa to a lookout in the woods. Because she has fallen for another boy (or is just not sure of her feelings), Alan signals two masked henchmen. They knock Vanessa to the ground, and Alan strangles her until she is unconscious. Then he pushes her down a steep slope, 20 feet into the depths. She survives only by luck, as bushes break her fall.
Alan goes to a high school in Bad Godesberg, his accomplice Mohammad to the King Fahd Academy. The identity of the third perpetrator cannot be ascertained. Characteristic and typical of an honor killing: when the court visits the crime scene with the suspect to get a picture of the crime, Alan invites friends and acquaintances. Presumably they are there to see how he defended his honor.
The juvenile division of the Bonn District Court sentences Alan in February 2009 for attempted manslaughter and aggravated assault to a juvenile sentence of 4 years and 9 months. His helper receives a suspended sentence of one and a half years. The verdict states that there was much evidence that the crime was planned from the beginning. The prosecution demands a conviction for attempted murder, appeals, but withdraws the request. In August 2009, the Federal Court of Justice rejects the defense's appeal.
A newspaper in Bonn gives as the perpetrators the names Farid and Tamer. However, they have been changed.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
