Honour killing story
born: 1983
Killed: June 11, 2019
Residence: Hamburg
Origin: Victim: Germany/possibly USA; Perpetrator: Algeria
Children: 3
Perpetrator: Nasr El Ddin B. (At that time 32 years old)
This murder can be seen as an alcohol fight with a fatal outcome. Or to cover up a rape. But it is also possible that there is a role for honour. Here are the facts:
In a cafe in Hamburg-Neugraben there will be a party on the night of June 11, 2019. Joseline, named Josy, is alone in the pub at 3 a.m. with Nasr from Algeria. Nasr lives in an apartment complex in Neu Wulmstorf, where refugees are accommodated. He works in the pub, probably as a cleaner. Josy is German, probably with an American-black background.
Probably Josy and Nasr are drunk. For some unknown reason, he murders her, ties the body with tape and transports it with a junk car to a bush near the scene of the crime. Then he goes home by bike or motorcycle. A roommate sees him covered in blood when he arrives.
The next morning, the landlady's husband finds traces of blood and informs the police. Parts of the crime (but not the crime itself) can be seen on a surveillance video. The perpetrator is arrested in a hospital in Buxtehude. His hand is broken. He confesses the crime. Other guests of the evening refuse to cooperate with the police, they may have been too drunk or put under pressure. The next morning, the policemen find the body.
So far nothing is known about the motif. However, in the past there must have been a relationship or something similar between the two. In this respect it is unclear whether it is an honour killing or not.
In December 2019 the process will start for the Landgericht Hamburg. Initially it was said that the perpetrator came from Lebanon. But he comes from Algeria and has been in Germany since 2016. He applied for asylum under a false identity, which was rejected. He has a criminal record for theft. He also wants to return to Algeria, which puts his desire for "persecution in his homeland" in a different light.
In April 2020, the perpetrator will be sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for manslaughter. The judge speaks about the special futility of the act and an extraordinarily violent act. The motive remains unclear - sexual rejection is probably part of it.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
