Honour killing story
born 1976
stabbed: December 17/18, 2010
Residence: Bad Homburg/Frankfurt/M.
Origin: Victim: Germany; Perpetrator: Turkey
Children: 1 daughter (aged 12 at the time of the crime)
Perpetrator: her ex-boyfriend Emir C. (34 years old)
Janine lives with her 12-year-old daughter in Bad Homburg and works as a manager in a café. Her boyfriend Emir was born in Freiburg, lives in Frankfurt/M. and is considered jealous. He pretends to be Spanish ("Emilio") and claims to be a physiotherapist. In fact, he works in catering. He is probably a nice, pleasant, but dependent man. Because he cannot handle money, his landlord tells him to leave at the end of November 2010. Apparently, he hopes Janine will take him in.
There is a lot of arguing. Janine breaks up with him in November 2010 and throws him out the door. Emir will not accept this.Five weeks later, just before her 34th birthday, he gets access to the apartment. When the neighbors walk their dog, he goes inside. He grabs Janine when she comes home from work and strangles her. Then he takes her in the elevator to the basement and stabs her 40 times. He brought the kitchen knife from home. Allegedly, he will later say, to kill himself in front of Janine. From the fight, he also carries scratches and traces of blood.
Although there is a clinic next door that could have saved Janine's life, Emir takes a cab back to Frankfurt and turns himself in to the police. Officers find the mutilated body in a pool of blood. During the crime, the 12-year-old daughter is upstairs in the apartment with her biological father (she has the Spanish surname of her ex-husband).
The trial will begin in May 2011 at the district court in Frankfurt. There he will be sentenced in July to 13 years in prison for manslaughter, after which he will be deported to Turkey.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
