Safiye
born: 1984
killed: 1 June 2008
Residence: Munich-Giesing
Origin: Turkey
Children: one son, at the time of the crime 18 months old
Perpetrator: her husband Hasan T., at the time of the crime 31 years old
On June 1, 2008, Hasan T., a trained hotel manager, called the fire department at about 10:15 am. In his apartment, someone had fallen. Rescuers find the apartment full of blood. Hasan's 24-year-old wife Safiye is dead, her body unclothed. There are injuries all over her body. Some point to abuse long before the day of death.

Investigation shows that the perpetrator first knocked his wife unconscious with a crutch and then left her to get cigarettes. She suffocates in her vomit. The stool lies broken next to the body. He must have used a second one to continue the beating. The son is also in the apartment. The juvenile detention agency is taking over the care.

As in many cases of honor killings, there is already a prior history of violence. Hasan has already come to the attention of the police three times for assaulting his wife. But she did not cooperate with the officers.

On April 6, 2009, Hasan was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Munich District Court.

Questions about honour killings

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
