Honour killing story: Teuta F.(2012) - Investigate Honor Killing

The office administrator Teuta has been with Kujtim for 5 years. Both are Albanians with Serbian nationality. They have an ordinary toddler son. The relationship is violent, he hits her - even in front of her son. Teuta is getting a divorce. Kujtim threatens and stalks her.

On May 10, 2012 Kujtim shoots his ex-girlfriend for a school after she brought the son to kindergarten. He hits her twice in the chest and once in the head. Then he flees with his car, crashes and forces another driver with the gun out of her car. With this he flees further. The police launch a manhunt. Teuta is flown to the hospital in the rescue helicopter and survives.

Barely 3 weeks later, the perpetrator is arrested in an apartment in Dorsten (NRW). In November 2012, the trial on attempted murder and serious exploitation will start at the Regional Court of Oldenburg. During the trial, the family of the accused threatens the family of the victim. In January 2013 Kujtim will be sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.
wants to end the relationship.
was the victim of rape or sexual assault.
was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
