Honour killing story

Esma
Born: 2000
Attempted murder: 22 August 2021
Residence: Kamen (NRW)
Origin: Syria
Children: 2
Perpetrator: her brother Abdullah A. (18 years old at the time of the crime)
You could say that this attempted murder is "not a serious murder attempt at all" because there is no seriously injured victim. The facts: A Syrian man has 6 children, including a son Abdullah and a daughter who married a Syrian man in Syria, who wears a headscarf and has 2 children at the age of 21.

Abdullah goes after his sister in August. The argument continues the next day. Abdullah goes after her with a pointed kitchen tool. She flees the house, he runs after her with the "corer". Basically, another brother gets in his way and a sister calls the police.

The officers detain Abdullah, who repeats his murder threat. So the arrest warrant is for attempted murder. Abdullah tells the magistrate about his image of women. It is, according to a media report, "incompatible with the Western values." Esma is not the victim's real name.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
