This is an honour killing of a man. The pattern is typical of these cases: because the male victim wanted to help a woman escape from her violent marriage.

The perpetrator Erkan is married to Ay se. They have two children. Acquaintances report domestic violence and brutal abuse.

Ayse turns to her neighbour Ahmet, who runs a computer shop and is considered very religious. His family tries to help Ayse with the divorce. Her husband Erkan doesn't want to accept this. In October 2011 there is a fight that is reported to the police.

On 6 February 2012, Ahmet loaded furniture into his small truck and parked it in front of his house. Next to him his neighbour Erkan stops. He pulls a gun and shoots him 6 times in head and chest. Then the perpetrator goes to a restaurant and calls the police from there. Then he goes back outside and shoots his victim again. His parents (who wanted to help him carry the furniture) watch the scene.

This public staging is typical of an honour killing. In the nearby primary school of Duisburg there will later be a discussion about the fact that some pupils justified the murder as an honour killing.

The perpetrator is arrested by the police after the crime, but refuses to testify. The victim dies in hospital. Ayse is not the real name of the woman.

In August 2012 the trial will start at the regional court of Duisburg. The text messages read out during the trial indicate an extramarital relationship between the murder victim and the divorced wife of the perpetrator. However, this point remains vague. In December Erkan was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
