Honour killing story
born: -
Murder attempt: 2020
Residence: Utrecht, the Netherlands
Origin: India
Children: 2
Perpetrator: her husband (44 years)
A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for years of abusing his wife and children. According to the judge, the violence was "excessive, frequent and humiliating."
The husband and wife married in 2007. Because of the beatings and belittling that followed shortly after the wedding ceremony, she wanted to run away from him earlier. But after mediation from family members, she chose to stay with her husband.
In 2020, she filed a report after the husband stabbed her in the leg during an argument. He told the children that he had intentionally stabbed near an artery so there was a chance their mother would die. He had the intent to kill her, the court ruled.
The children were also beaten with ladles and belts. They were pulled by their hair and hung by their heads over a toilet bowl. Among other things, the husband forced his wife to eat and drink their children's feces. He also threw boiling water and oil over her. He did this several times, but once - the woman explained to police - aimed at her "clitoris to paralyze it." Exceptional, sadistic and cruel, the court ruled.
The sentence of 9 years in prison is higher than the prosecutor's demand. In determining this, the judge took into account that the man did not cooperate with psychological research and that no psychiatric treatment in a clinic could be imposed on him. The judge also seriously blamed the man for inciting his children to abuse their mother.
In addition to the prison sentence, the man is not allowed to contact his ex-wife and their children for the next few years because, according to experts, there is a risk of honor killing. This is because the man's family thinks it is not acceptable that the woman talked to the police.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
