Saturday afternoon, March 16, around 5:50 p.m., a 37-year-old woman fled her home in Mierlo, bleeding. Her throat and wrists had been slit by her 49-year-old partner, in front of their five children, ranging in age from 6 to 20. By the time police arrived, the woman had died. Four children suffered minor injuries, presumably because they tried to intervene. The five children were taken to the hospital. After a manhunt, the woman's 49-year-old boyfriend was arrested.

Neighbors report that the family is Syrian. The man has reportedly been staying in the rental house in Mierlo for a year, and the woman joined him last fall with her five children, some of whom are from a previous relationship of the man's.

More is not known, not even the names of those involved. We look forward to additional information!

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
