On Friday, March 29, 2024, a 21-year-old woman was murdered by her father in one of the villages of Abadan, in the province of Khuzestan. The murder has been labeled as an "Honor Killing". The young girl was strangled.

After the murder was reported to the police, the family of the victim consented to the killer and stated that they have no complaints against the perpetrator of this crime.

In the past years, there have been many honor killings in Khuzestan province, and all these murderers were forgiven by their family in the first days of the crime and perpetrators were released from prison after a short period of time.

Iran should bring its laws more in line with international standards, especially by abolishing laws that allow perpetrators of honor killings to be excused by their families or face only greatly reduced prison sentences.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
