Honour killing story
born 1972
stabbed to death: 16 January 2007
Residence: Munich
Origin: perpetrator: Turkey, victim: Germany
Children: one daughter (8 years old) and two sons (10, 15 years old)
Perpetrator: Menderes K., 36 years old at the time of the crime, warehouse worker
Marion and Menderes have lived together for 18 years. They have three children. There are quarrels, unemployment, some divorces, money problems. They both drink alcohol and spend a lot of time playing computer games.
Menderes abuses his wife. The file contains a case in which he strangles Marion and a case in which he smashes a beer bottle on her head.
On January 16, 2007, there is another argument about how long Marion spends on the computer. In the course of the argument, she puts his suitcases outside the door.
It is clear that she no longer wants to submit to her husband's ideas about their life together. During the argument, he goes to the kitchen, grabs a knife and stabs his wife in front of the three children.
At this point, the perpetrator has 1.7 promille in his blood, the victim 1.2. Enough to argue - too little for reduced culpability. Marion is bleeding to death.
In October 2007, Menderes is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife.
In this case, one might assume that it was not an honor killing at all, but yet another marital brawl with a nasty ending. But the judge, delivering his verdict, tells the defendants, "He was angry because his wife did not submit to his wishes." The perpetrator also allegedly stated to the police that his wife deserved death because she wanted to take the children from him.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
