Honour killing story
born: 1990
stabbed and run over: 1 January 2009
Residence: Harsewinkel (near Gütersloh)
Origin: Turkey
Children: none
Perpetrator: her cousin and husband Önder B., aged 26 at the time of the crime.
The Kurdish woman Müdje B. (in some newspapers she is also called Mizgin) was born in Germany and married a cousin in Turkey at the age of 17. Since she is still in school, the imported groom cannot come to Germany in 2007 as part of the family reunification. Önder still lives in Turkey. While Müdje clearly states that she was forced into the marriage, he begins to threaten her by text messages.
When Müdje is 18, she files a criminal complaint in August 2008. She testifies that her husband tries to force her to go to Turkey. He is entered into the wanted persons system to determine his whereabouts. Currently, Müdje has graduated from high school and wants to become a hairdresser.
In October, Önder enters Germany illegally (possibly not for the first time, possibly with the help of PKK smugglers). He initially lives with relatives in Dortmund, later in the house of Müdje's parents, but probably in a room of his own. Possibly the parents want to spare their daughter the rape in their own home. Or they know that they could be criminally prosecuted as a result. Or it is a deal: in exchange, Müdje will not go to the police.
When Müdje goes out on New Year's Eve, Önder follows her. He takes her to a remote dirt road in Harsewinkel, where he knocks her down and stabs her, about two hours after midnight. Then he runs her over with a borrowed Audi. During the autopsy, several impact wounds from a billiard cue are found. The stick is later found broken at the crime scene, as is the blade - also broken - and bloodied.
From the crime scene, the perpetrator calls the police. Müdje was buried on January 5, 2008 in Gütersloh. It was later said that the two were married under Turkish law, but not under German law.
In July 2009, the trial was opened at the Bielefeld District Court. Önder confessed to the crime and demanded that the autopsy examine when his wife last had sexual intercourse. In August, Önder is sentenced to life imprisonment. In January 2011 it is announced that he wants to be transferred to Turkey. So far the prosecution is against it. He would have served barely 15 years in prison there.
What is an honour killing? |
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey. |
