Honour killing story

Nadia
Born : unknown
Attempted murder : September 1st, 2020
Residence: Rotterdam, Netherlands
Children: unknown
Perpetrator: Mohamed El M. (27 years old at the time of the crime)
Nadia was seriously injured by a member of her family from Vlaardingen while she was held captive in a house in Rotterdam.

On September 1, 27-year-old Mohamed El M. illegally deprived the victim of her freedom by holding her against her will, locking her in a room and locking the front door of the residence. Her phone and keys were then taken from her and she was ordered to remain seated.

It was then that the acts of violence began, in which Mohamed received help from others, according to the prosecution. The aim was to take the woman's life.

For the Prosecutor, it is established that Mohamed El M. hit Nadia on the head several times, with fists and (flat) hands.

Finally, Nadia's throat was choked and Mohamed El M. hit her with a barbell and dumbbells to which weights were attached. The execution of the murder was not completed.

Because of the involvement of several people, the captivity, and the manner in which the attempted murder was carried out, this could be a case of honour-related violence. However, another motive is also possible. The real name of the victim is not known.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
