In 2017, Tiba al-Ali traveled to Turkey with her family. She then refused to return to Iraq with her family and decided to settle in Turkey. Her father, in particular, was unhappy with her decision to live alone in Turkey.

Tiba did well in Turkey and had many followers on Youtube where she posted videos about her daily life and in which her Syrian fiancé often figured.

In January 2022, Tiba will return to Iraq to cheer on the national soccer team. Local media report that she had an appointment to meet her mother at a friend's house in Baghdad and was surprised when the entire family showed up. She was drugged and taken back to her parents' home in the Iraqi province of Al-Qadisiyah.

When she came to, she was furious and argued with her father. The local police tried unsuccessfully to mediate between Tiba and her relatives to finally resolve the family dispute.

While Tiba was sleeping, her father entered the room and strangled her. He then reported to the police and said he had killed his daughter to "wash away the shame."

According to Article 409 of the Iraqi Penal Code, judges can impose lighter sentences on people who kill for "honorable reasons" or out of provocation. If a father kills his daughter because of "honor," he can even avoid a prison sentence.

Questions about honour killings

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
