Honour killing story

Mustafa Tütüncü
born 1965
stabbed to death: October 3/4, 2003
Residence: Hamburg
Origin: Turkey
Children: more than 1
Perpetrator: Mustafa G. (34 years old at the time of the crime)
Mustafa came to Germany at the age of 12 and married a Turkish saleswoman in 1994. Their daughter was born the following year.

In 2002, the woman meets a married Turkish pallet trader from Delmenhorst, also named Mustafa. He helps her - it is said - to record a CD as a singer. An affair develops.

In July 2003 Mustafa strangles his wife and after another violent altercation he is temporarily denied access to the marital home. This can be seen as a jealousy drama. One can also suspect an honor motive. The perpetrator needs to restore his honor. His family and the family of the unfaithful wife threaten the lover.

On the night of October 4, 2003, Mustafa and a childhood friend (or cousin) provide themselves with access to his rival's second home in Hamburg. He had probably found the key on his wife's bunch of keys. Mustafa stabs him to death with 28 knife stabs while he is sleeping.

After the crime, Mustafa becomes suspicious. Friends give him a false alibi. The accomplice drowns in an accident in Turkey in 2006. Apparently, however, he told someone about the crime before he died. This informant reports to the police in 2012. Aktenzeichen XY ungelöst also reports on the case. In September 2014, police arrest Mustafa at his workplace in the Hafencity. He exercises his right to refuse to testify.

In the trial before the district court in Hamburg, the sister of the accomplice turns up, who evidently knows about the crime and also testifies. Thereupon the perpetrator breaks his silence. The testimony of a neighbor, who had died in the meantime, was read out. According to him, the victim tried to flee, covered in blood. In the backyard, the perpetrator tried to decapitate the victim. During that process, the knife broke off.

In March 2016, Mustafa was sentenced to life in prison by the district court in Hamburg.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
