Honour killing story

Funda
Born: 1978
Strangled: 5/6 May 2010
Residence: Iserlohn (NRW)
Origin: Turkey
Children: victim: 3; perpetrator: 3
Offender: her lover Murat (34 years old at the time of the crime)
Funda is 14 years old and married to Mehmet, who is six years older. At 15, she becomes a mother for the first time. Her sister will later say that the marriage was "the hell on earth ".

After ten years of marriage, Funda falls in love with her brother-in-law. Both have three children with their spouses. In the spring of 2009 they leave their families and run away together, first to Turkey, later to Iserlohn.

In May 2009 Funda wants to divorce and return to her children. Presumably she assumes that she will be awarded custody. But Murat will not tolerate this. He strangles her with a scarf. Then he arranges for a colleague's car and drives with the corpse in the boot 500 kilometres to Süßen near Göppingen in Baden-Württemberg, his former home. He lays the body in front of her sister's house.

A few hours later, Murat calls relatives and confesses to the crime. He goes to a lawyer and is arrested by the police there.

In October 2010, the trial begins at the district court in Hagen. In November, Murat was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter.

What is an honour killing?

An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:

Questions about honour killings

  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.

  • wants to end the relationship.

  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.

  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.
